The Triple Venn Diagram - Career Coaching

About This Tool

This is a career coaching exercise I designed and have used with dozens of clients over the years. It is an excellent starting point for honing in on your authentic self.  Especially useful when beginning the nascent stages of a job search. The goal is to be spending as much of our time doing things in the middle of all three circles -- but getting there is really hard. Many people get "trapped" in the "Good At" circle. Others find the "Have to Do" circle has sort of accidentally creeped in to dominate their time.

Reflection questions:

(1) What are common themes across the different items I placed in each area?

(2) If I had to "shade in" where I spend my "best energy" hours of the day, where would they fall?

(3) Which activities have "migrated" from one area to another over the years?

(4) How can I do more of the things in the middle of the three circles?  What would be enablers?  What are detractors currently that don't let me spend time there?

(5) How can I do less of the things in the "have to / good at" areas? What would enable me to do less of those? What are detractors currently that mandate me to spend my time there?

(6) What would it take to, one year from now, be doing a lot more things in the "center" of my triple venn diagram?

Why It Works

This is based off of self-actualization coaching philosophies that emphasize locus of control. We consciously have control over how we spend our time, and barriers and blockers might be real or imagined, but are more often change-able than we realize.  The center of the venn diagram is known as when we are in "Flow" (a psychology term that describes the mental state of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in a process or activity).
