Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders

About This Tool

Especially helpful for those individuals in early stages of Anorexia Nervosa or who have Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder or similar presentations of disordered eating, this tool will help the learner discover trends and patterns between thoughts, feelings and behaviors around food and body image.

The first part of the download includes one week's worth of self monitoring where the individual will identify their thoughts, feelings and behaviors around food each day.  Next is a worksheet on identifying triggers or activating events and how beliefs and/or behaviors contribute to various consequences (or outcomes). Then the individual will move to an advanced skill in CBT called Cognitive Restructuring.  Examples of common cognitive distortions (such as all or nothing thinking) will be provided.  Then the indivdual will, with curiosity and without judgment, really examine an automatic thought around food or body, the emotions and intensity behind the thought and evidence for and against that thought.  With that information, a new or restructured/reframed thought can be considered that is free of any distortion.  Once these skills have been practiced over time, the indivdual can discover what warning signs (cognitive distortions, triggers or activating events, skipping breakfast or lunch, etc) are for eating disorder thoughts or behaviors and what skills/tools have helped them in the past and they can add this to their "relapse prevention" worksheet.

These worksheets are self paced and the skills learned will likely become easier over a period of weeks or months of practicing what the individual learns from their own patterns, beliefs and behaviors.

Why It Works

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of the primary evidence based tools, specifically for Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder.  Many of the skills can also be helpful in early stages of Anorexia Nervosa.  These skills and techniques are helpful at laying the foundation for behavioral work and then once an individual's behaviors around food and body are more stable and regular, deeper therapeutic work around self esteem, self worth, trauma, family dynamics, perfectionism, etc can be done with greater impact because the mind and body are nourished appropriately with the foundation of behavior and thought change.
